If you’ve been reading the latest cannabis articles, you’ve no doubt heard about the human endocannabinoid system.

The human endocannabinoid system is a network of cellular receptors in the body that helps us maintain homeostasis, or balance.

The most well-known cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, are proteins imbedded in the membrane of cells. These surface proteins are then attached to another protein that determines the signaling direction, either activation or inhibition.

CB1 receptors are located mostly in the brain and nervous system. They target appetite, immune cells, motor activity, motor coordination, pain perception, short term memory and thinking processes.

CB2 receptors target the cardiovascular system, central nervous system, immune system, reproductive system, respiratory tract, skeletal muscle and skin.

CB1 and CB2 receptors activate THC to produce the “high” associated with cannabis.

THC fits perfectly into neural receptors like CB1 and CB2, but CBD can block THC from triggering the signal, which is why combinations of THC/CBD products affect the body differently.
